Back to School Prayer

Author: Elton Streyle, Contributor: Noah, Photography and Editing: Ali

Heavenly Father, thank you for this time of the year when many young people are going back to school. Let us not forget the privilege that is ours in America to be educated in many different fields of study.

I want to bring to You my loved ones and friends who will be in school this year. I ask You to give them the ability to comprehend what is being presented and discernment and wisdom to know when something is being taught that is not in agreement with the teaching in Your Word. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him James 1:5.

Put a hedge of protection around students and teachers to keep them from the influences of wrong theories and teaching. I ask for what Jesus said in the second half of John 17:15. “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

As these young people face many kinds of temptations in school, encourage them to daily spend time in Your Word for direction. Make the words in Psalm 119:9 a great desire of theirs. “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.”

If any do not have a relationship with Jesus as their Savior, make that the highest educational priority for them this year.

I bring this prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God’s Holiness in the Believer’s Life

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for not only giving the command to be holy but that You have given me a way to fulfill that command. “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.“‘ 1 Peter 1:15-16

You have set me apart and made me holy because of my relationship with Jesus Christ, Who covered the gap between You, Heavenly Father, and me, a sinful human. I appreciate the fact that Your holiness purifies me and shows me how to continually be separated from all that is unholy.

Develop in me the connection between Your Holiness and my wholeness in life. Give me the courage to live a life that is different from the ways of the world and realize that the way I live in private and in public has an influence on what people think of the God I profess to serve.

Show me any hindrances that keep You from being able to develop Your Holiness in and through me, and enable me to reject whatever is not the best for me. May I experience the truth of Psalm 29:2 Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

I bring these requests to You, my Father in Heaven, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Hearing From God

Lord, thank you that You are willing to listen to me, and even more important, that You want me to have the blessing of hearing from You. “Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.“‘

In the midst of all the competing voices in the world today, make it clear to me that most of what I hear from You will be from Your Holy Word, the Bible. As in the story in 1 Kings 19:9-13, most of the time You do not communicate with me in a loud and boisterous way, but by “a still small voice.”

Since You reveal Yourself in quietness and meekness, show me ways to be physically and mentally still so that I can hear You clearly. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” This being so, I open my heart and mind to You and ask You to direct me in discerning what needs to happen in my life through every situation.

Lord, as I listen, “show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.” Psalm 25:4-5

I bring these thoughts in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Overcoming Loneliness and Discouragement

Author: Elton Streyle, Contributor: Noah, Photography and Editing: Ali

Loving Heavenly Father, thank you that when I am lonely or discouraged Your Word tells me that as a believer I am never alone and that You are standing with me wherever I go and whatever I do.

Encourage me with the promise  in these two Scriptures: Hebrews 13:5-6Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, [“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Psalm 118:6] So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?

It is comforting to know that You are pleased to call me Your own. “For the Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people.” 1 Samuel 12:22

Lord, when I am lonely or discouraged, direct me to Your Word and saturate my mind with verses of Your promises and comfort. Give me the ability to discern what kind of music to listen to that will  help me get back on a positive track. Encourage me to find the ways You want to use me for the cause of Christ by doing things such as praying for, physically helping, spiritually encouraging, and comforting others through calls, letter writing, etc. “Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.Psalm 100:2

The next time I am lonely or discouraged, remind me of the messages in these passages of Scripture. It is wonderful to be a child of Yours and to have Your Word to solve every situation in life.

I bring these thoughts in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Praying Words from the Psalms

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Psalms as a way to communicate with You. “This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” Like David, I am going to use some of the words in the Psalms to express my thoughts to You.

From Psalm 108:1-5, I say to You, O Lord, “O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to You among the nations.  For Your mercy is great above the heavens, and Your truth reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and Your glory above all the earth.

From Psalm 32:5, “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

From Psalm 119:33-37, “Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way.

And finally, from Psalm 25:1-5, “To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in You; Let me not be ashamed; Let not my enemies triumph over me. Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause. Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.

Thank you, Father, for David’s expressions to You, that were led by the Holy Spirit, that help me to follow You.

I bring this prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayer for Yielding to the Holy Spirit

Author: Elton Streyle, Scripture selection: Eugene Sandin, Contributor: Noah, Graphic design and editing: Ali

The purpose of this prayer variation is to allow the believer’s new nature in the Holy Spirit to take control of the old nature in the flesh. The Holy Spirit enters the believer at the time of salvation and never leaves. It is the Spirit’s desire to maintain our relationship with God. “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.Galatians 5:25

The Holy Spirit can be grieved by the sin of the old nature if a believer does not allow the Holy Spirit to control him through His power. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30

The white arrows in the chart represent the level of control the Holy Spirit has in the  different areas of a believer’s life. The white to black gradient rectangles represent the holiness of God and the sin of our old nature respectively. The white arrows, representing the Holy Spirit, reach from the holiness of God into the sin of our old natures to purify and sanctify us in all areas of life. For example, the chart shows that the believer has allowed the Holy Spirit great control over their appetite for food, but has not given the Holy Spirit much control over their money.

This chart is only an example of what a believer’s level of Spirit-control can look like in different areas. The level of control the Holy Spirit has in each area will differ for every believer.

Determine where you are on a scale from 1-10, 1 being low Holy Spirit control and 10 being high Holy Spirit control, by thinking through how much control you have allowed the Holy Spirit over your marriage or dating relationship, work/career, habits, leisure, sex drive, other bodily needs, thought life, entertainment/recreation, children, money, education and appetite for food.

Continually ask God to encourage you to allow the Holy Spirit more control over the areas you struggle with. Emphasize one area each day by reading the Scripture and then yielding all of that part of your life to the Holy Spirit.

Print this page and do this exercise as part of your daily devotion time.

Read the Scripture that goes with each heading and the verses before and after the Scripture indicated for context.

1. Marriage/Dating

  • 1 Corinthians 7:1-3 It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.
  • Genesis 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

2. Work/Career

  • Colossians 3:22-23 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only where their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (NIV)
  • 1 Timothy 6:7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

3. Habits

  • 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
  • Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

4. Leisure/Time

  • Ephesians 5:15-16 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,  redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
  • Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

5. Sexuality

  • 1 Corinthians 6:18Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
  • Matthew 5:28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  • 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. (NIV)

6. Other Needs

  • Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
  • 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.'”

7. Thought Life

  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
  • Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
  • Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (NIV)

8. Entertainment/Recreation

  • Psalm 101:3 I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.
  • Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
  • 1 Corinthians 10:23 “‘I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.” (NIV)

9. Children

  • Ephesians 6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
  • 1 Timothy 5:8 ‘”But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.“‘

10. Money

  • Matthew 6:20-21  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (KJV)
  •  1 Timothy 6:10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (KJV)

11. Contentment

  • Hebrews 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”‘
  • Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.“‘

12. Appetite for Food

  • John 6:27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.
  • Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.“‘

The Lord bless you as you complete this prayer exercise. This prayer method can be used on a continuing basis.

4th of July Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you that in our country we still have the freedom to celebrate the 4th of July, the date of the adoption of the Declaration of  Independence. Much has happened since that day many years ago. We ask that You forgive us individually and as a nation for taking Your blessing for granted and turning to so many destructive ways that Your instructions in Your Word make it clear that You disapprove of.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14 You tell us, If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” I realize that this verse in the Old Testament was referring to Israel, but the truth in it can apply to America today.

As believers, remind us daily that it is our responsibility to cry out to You and seek Your face individually and as a nation. We ask forgiveness for our wicked ways. Direct us to repent and turn back to You.

We ask You to pour out Your mercy and grace on our country so that we can continue to be blessed with the phrase in the song America the Beautiful which says “America, America, God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.”

On this special 4th day of July, show us how to appreciate the message of verse four in the song Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory even more: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was borne across the sea with a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free.”

We bring these thoughts in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Receiving Grace From God

Author: Elton Streyle, Contributor: Noah, Photography and Editing: Ali

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your grace that gives salvation to all who respond to Your gift of Jesus dying on the cross, and His resurrection. I am reminded in Ephesians 2:8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

It gives me joy to know that You will demonstrate Your power toward me in my times of weakness, and that You are able to constantly bring me peace by Your mercy and grace as You tell me in Hebrews 4:16. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Since Jesus came  to highlight Your mercy, love, and forgiveness, direct me to know Him better so that I can increase my understanding of Your will for my life.

Show me how to trust You every day for all of my needs and all of my Godly desires. “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.2 Corinthians 12:9

May my walk with You be such that I clearly recognize my need to confess my absolute helplessness to You, so that I may receive from You the fulfillment of the promise in 1 Peter 5:10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” Jesus, I want to thank You for Your unconditional love for me.

I bring this prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

A Father’s Prayer

Author: Elton Streyle, Photography and Editing: Ali

Heavenly Father, thank you for the good influence many of our fathers have had on us. I know that there are some who have not had a good father-child relationship, but what a privilege that we can all have a wonderful relationship with You, our Heavenly Father, regardless of our past. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

As a father and grandfather, I come to You to pour out my heart to You and ask forgiveness for the failures that I have had in being the kind of husband and father that is best for my wife and children.

I realize that I need You to direct me to be the kind of father You want me to be. Develop in me the ability to “trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths” Proverbs 3:5-6.

Thank you that even when things look impossible, all things are possible with You. “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26.

I want my family life to be Bible centered. Show me all that I need to learn from Your Word to make this happen. I ask that You work in my children’s hearts and direct them to be accepting of my Biblical approach to being a father and grandfather.

I give You thanks and praise in advance for all that You are going to do. I bring these requests in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
